Footrace Against Time

Maybe no one among us has NEVER experienced any tragic incident in our life time. Or probably no one among us have claimed that they haven't heard of any tragedy that ever happened to others.

Yes, tragedy is a menace to the human society. Its aftermath of suffering or the horrible loss of life bring direct and indirect grievous experience to the affected person. However, if there is anyone out there who have never experience any tragic experience in life, maybe you will never know what compassion is not until you've experienced tragedy in your life.

When the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York collapsed due to terrorist attacks during the unforgettable September 11, 2001 incident, it stirred many people into compassion on the innocent victims. It also created bursts of anger and retaliation against terrorism. The same reaction occurred when Pearl Harbor was bombed which catapulted the United States of America to join the World War II.

Just before the end of the year 2004, another tragic incident happened in Asia. Many lives have perished during the tsunami incident that hit many parts of Asia and east Africa. Loved ones have been lost, homes were washed away, families have been separated, local economies have been severely affected, and surviving victims are constantly haunted

by the terrible experience they have suffered. And this incident also created compassion not just by one man but by many nations to help the victims and to help them recover from this devastation.

Lately, last August 29, 2005, the coastal regions of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama have been hit by a strong hurricane named Katrina. Its aftermath of flooding in the city of New Orleans left millions of people without electrical power, millions of people displaced, and worst of all, death toll have been estimated by the thousands. It is estimated that this is the worst natural disaster that has hit the United States of America. Again, many people have been moved with compassion to help the victims.

Often times people would be tempted to ask, where is God when these things happen? Where is God when a loved one is lost? By careful analysis, God is silently working with compassion through the human agencies like you and me. Many organizations have been moved with love and compassion to help - and this is through the inspiration with God's love. An example of such organizations is the ADRA International and many more organizations.

But these charitable organizations can not function without our support. All of us can share our help through these organizations be it through our financial donations, material donations, voluntary services, or even simply through our prayers. If you know of a charitable organization, don't hesitate to donate to help the victims. Even a dollar alone can make a lot of difference.

Who knows, the life you are helping is your relative's, your friends', or it could even be your own someday. Have you a compassion to help others?
